Out-of-State Contractors with California Licenses
You may notice that some contractors listed on this site have business addresses outside California. This is not an error. The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) requires any contractor performing work in California to hold a valid California contractor license, regardless of where the business is physically located.
Why Out-of-State Contractors Hold California Licenses
California law requires a contractor license for any construction work valued at $500 or more performed within the state. This applies to businesses headquartered in other states that take on California projects. A contractor based in Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, or any other state must obtain a CSLB license before legally contracting work in California.
These contractors go through the same licensing process as California-based businesses. They must pass the required trade and law exams, meet bonding and insurance requirements, and comply with all CSLB regulations. Their license status, bond information, and disciplinary history are tracked by the CSLB the same way as any in-state contractor.
What This Means for Homeowners
If you are hiring a contractor for work in California, the contractor must hold a valid California license whether they are based in-state or out-of-state. You can verify any contractor's license on this site by searching their name or license number.
The same consumer protections apply. Out-of-state contractors with California licenses are subject to the same bonding requirements, workers' compensation rules, and disciplinary oversight as in-state contractors.
Browsing This Site
The city directory pages on this site list contractors by their California business address. Contractors based outside California do not appear in the city directory, but their individual license pages are fully available. You can find any contractor using the search on the homepage.
