Insurance Requirements for California Concrete Contractors

Concrete contractors perform structural work that forms the foundation and framework of buildings, driveways, patios, and infrastructure. Defective concrete work can compromise the structural integrity of an entire building and is expensive to remediate.

What the CSLB Requires

A C-8 license requires the standard $25,000 contractor license bond and workers' compensation insurance (or exemption). Concrete work typically involves crews, so workers' comp coverage is standard for most C-8 contractors.

General Liability for Concrete Contractors

Concrete contractors face moderate-to-high liability premiums. The structural nature of the work means that defects can affect the entire building, and remediation often requires removing and replacing large sections.

Standard minimums are $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Contractors working on commercial foundations or multi-story structures may need higher limits.

Specific Risks for Concrete Contractors

  1. Structural defects. Improperly mixed, placed, or cured concrete can crack, spall, or fail to meet load-bearing specifications. These defects are expensive to repair and may not appear until years after placement.
  2. Adjacent property damage. Concrete work involves heavy equipment, material deliveries, and excavation that can damage neighboring properties, driveways, and landscaping.
  3. Underground utility strikes. Foundation and flatwork excavation can damage underground utilities.

Need Workers' Comp or General Liability Coverage?

The CSLB requires workers' comp but does not require general liability. Most clients and general contractors require proof of GL coverage before allowing a contractor on site. Get both quoted online in minutes.

What Homeowners Should Verify

  2. License bond and workers' comp confirmed current.
  3. General liability insurance with at least $1 million per occurrence. For foundation work, ask about completed operations coverage.
