Insurance Requirements for California Framing Contractors

Framing contractors build the structural skeleton of buildings. This is high-risk, physically demanding work that directly affects the structural integrity of every project. Framing errors can compromise an entire building and are extremely expensive to correct after the fact.

What the CSLB Requires

A C-5 license requires the standard $25,000 contractor license bond and workers' compensation insurance. Framing contractors nearly always employ crews, and the trade has a high injury rate from falls, power tool accidents, and material handling. Workers' comp is effectively mandatory for all but the smallest C-5 operations.

General Liability for Framing Contractors

Framing contractors pay high liability premiums relative to finish trades. The structural nature of the work means that defects create liability for every downstream trade and the entire building.

Standard minimums are $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. General contractors hiring framers typically require proof of GL coverage before allowing them on site.

Specific Risks for Framing Contractors

  1. Structural defects. Improperly sized headers, incorrect nailing patterns, or misaligned walls can cause structural failures. These defects are hidden behind finished walls and may not be discovered until years later.
  2. Fall injuries. Second-story framing, roof framing, and sheathing involve significant fall exposure. Workers' comp claims for falls are frequent and high-severity in this trade.
  3. Material damage. Framing lumber and engineered wood products are expensive. Miscuts, weather damage to exposed framing, and material waste create financial exposure.

What Homeowners Should Verify

  1. Active C-5 license on the CSLB record.
  2. Workers' comp insurance confirmed active. Framing involves crews and high injury risk.
  3. General liability insurance with at least $1 million per occurrence. For new construction, ask about completed operations coverage.
