CSLB Business Address Requirements for Contractors

The CSLB requires every licensed contractor to maintain a current business address on file. This address becomes part of your public license record and is visible to anyone who looks up your license. Here is what you need to know.

What the CSLB Requires

Your address of record is where the CSLB sends all official correspondence, including renewal notices, bond cancellation alerts, and enforcement actions. You are required to notify the CSLB within 90 days of any address change. Failure to maintain a current address can result in missed notices and license complications.

The CSLB accepts a business address, home address, or mailing address. However, a P.O. Box alone may not be sufficient for all CSLB purposes, as some correspondence requires a physical address.

The Home Address Problem

Many sole proprietors and small contractors use their home address as their CSLB business address. This is allowed, but it means your home address is publicly visible on the CSLB license lookup database. Anyone can find it.

For contractors who prefer to keep their home address private, the main alternatives are renting a commercial office (expensive if you do not need the space) or using a virtual office service that provides a real street address.

Virtual Office Addresses

A virtual office gives you a professional business address without the cost of renting physical space. Most services provide a real street address (not a P.O. Box), mail receiving and forwarding, and the ability to use the address on your CSLB license, business cards, and marketing materials.

When choosing a virtual office for your CSLB license, verify that the address is a real street address, that the service receives and forwards CSLB mail reliably, and that the provider operates in California.

Registered Agent vs. Business Address

If your business is an LLC or corporation, you also need a California registered agent (a separate requirement from your CSLB business address). The registered agent receives legal service of process documents. Some contractors use the same service for both.

Updating Your Address with the CSLB

You can update your address of record online through the CSLB online services portal or by submitting a Change of Address form by mail. The change must be submitted within 90 days of the move.

If you switch to a virtual office, update your CSLB address immediately. CSLB renewal notices and bond cancellation alerts go to the address on file. If those get returned as undeliverable, you may not receive critical notices in time.
