About These License Types

B: General Building Contractor

Authorizes construction of structures including residential, commercial, and industrial buildings requiring at least two unrelated building trades or crafts. May take prime contracts or subcontracts for framing or carpentry. May subcontract all specialty work but must hold the appropriate C license to self-perform specialty trade work.

Not authorized: Cannot self-perform specialty trade work (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.) without holding the corresponding C license. Cannot contract for C-16 Fire Protection or C-57 Well Drilling without the appropriate license or subcontractor.

C-10: Electrical Contractor

Places, installs, erects, or connects electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduits, solar photovoltaic cells, or any part thereof which generate, transmit, transform, or utilize electrical energy.

Not authorized: Electricians working under a C-10 must be certified per CA Labor Code.

C-16: Fire Protection Contractor

Lays out, fabricates, and installs all types of fire protection systems including all associated equipment.

Not authorized: Does not include electrical alarm systems.

Fabricates, installs, maintains, services, and repairs warm-air heating systems and water heating heat pumps, ventilating systems, air-conditioning systems, and the ducts, registers, flues, humidity and thermostatic controls and air filters in connection with these systems. Includes solar-powered HVAC systems.

Not authorized: Does not include boiler or steam heating (see C-4) or refrigeration below 50F (see C-38).

C-36: Plumbing Contractor

Provides means for a supply of safe water and proper disposal of fluid waste, including piping, storage tanks, venting, gas appliances and connections, water and gas piping, water heating equipment including solar, and health and safety devices such as backflow preventers and gas earthquake valves.

Not authorized: Does not include forced warm-air units (see C-20).

C-43: Sheet Metal Contractor

Selects, cuts, shapes, fabricates, and installs sheet metal including cornices, flashings, gutters, leaders, pans, kitchen equipment, duct work with insulation, patented chimneys, metal flues, and metal roofing systems.
