About These License Types
A: General Engineering Contractor
Authorizes construction of fixed works requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill, including irrigation, drainage, water power, water supply, flood control, inland waterways, harbors, docks, shipyards, dams, hydroelectric projects, levees, railroads, highways, tunnels, airports, sewers, bridges, pipelines, parks, refineries, and power plants.
Not authorized: Does not authorize work under a Class B General Building Contractor license or any specialty (C) classification unless incidental to the engineering project.
B: General Building Contractor
Authorizes construction of structures including residential, commercial, and industrial buildings requiring at least two unrelated building trades or crafts. May take prime contracts or subcontracts for framing or carpentry. May subcontract all specialty work but must hold the appropriate C license to self-perform specialty trade work.
Not authorized: Cannot self-perform specialty trade work (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.) without holding the corresponding C license. Cannot contract for C-16 Fire Protection or C-57 Well Drilling without the appropriate license or subcontractor.
C-11: Elevator Contractor
Fabricates, erects, installs, and repairs elevators including sheave beams, motors, cable and wire rope, guides, cab, counter weights, doors, controls, and signal systems for electrical, hydraulic, and manually operated elevators.
C-36: Plumbing Contractor
Provides means for a supply of safe water and proper disposal of fluid waste, including piping, storage tanks, venting, gas appliances and connections, water and gas piping, water heating equipment including solar, and health and safety devices such as backflow preventers and gas earthquake valves.
Not authorized: Does not include forced warm-air units (see C-20).
C-51: Structural Steel Contractor
Fabricates and erects structural steel shapes and plates used as structural members for buildings and structures, including riveting, welding, rigging, and metal roofing systems.
D21: Machinery and Pumps
Installs, maintains, and repairs machinery and pumps.
D28: Doors, Gates and Activating Devices
Installs, maintains, and repairs doors, gates, and their activating devices including automatic openers.
