About These License Types
A: General Engineering Contractor
Authorizes construction of fixed works requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill, including irrigation, drainage, water power, water supply, flood control, inland waterways, harbors, docks, shipyards, dams, hydroelectric projects, levees, railroads, highways, tunnels, airports, sewers, bridges, pipelines, parks, refineries, and power plants.
Not authorized: Does not authorize work under a Class B General Building Contractor license or any specialty (C) classification unless incidental to the engineering project.
B: General Building Contractor
Authorizes construction of structures including residential, commercial, and industrial buildings requiring at least two unrelated building trades or crafts. May take prime contracts or subcontracts for framing or carpentry. May subcontract all specialty work but must hold the appropriate C license to self-perform specialty trade work.
Not authorized: Cannot self-perform specialty trade work (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.) without holding the corresponding C license. Cannot contract for C-16 Fire Protection or C-57 Well Drilling without the appropriate license or subcontractor.
C-7: Low Voltage Systems Contractor
Installs, services, and maintains communication and low voltage systems not exceeding 91 volts, including telephone, sound, cable television, closed-circuit video, satellite dish antennas, instrumentation, temperature controls, and low voltage landscape lighting.
Not authorized: Does not include low voltage fire alarm systems or systems exceeding 91 volts (see C-10).
C-8: Concrete Contractor
Forms, pours, places, finishes, and installs specified mass, pavement, flat and other concrete work, and places and sets screeds for pavements or flatwork.
Not authorized: Does not include application of plaster coatings or placing and erecting steel reinforcing bars.
C-10: Electrical Contractor
Places, installs, erects, or connects electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduits, solar photovoltaic cells, or any part thereof which generate, transmit, transform, or utilize electrical energy.
Not authorized: Electricians working under a C-10 must be certified per CA Labor Code.
C-12: Earthwork and Paving Contractor
Digs, moves, and places earth materials for cuts, fills, excavations, grades, trenches, backfills, and tunnels (if incidental), including use of explosives. Includes mixing, fabricating, and placing paving and surfacing materials.
Not authorized: Does not include operations on sources of water (see Class A).
D06: Concrete Related Services
Installs reusable steel concrete form sections or interlocking precast pavers; performs post-tensioning, concrete sawing, breaking, curing, floor grinding, concrete restoration, and concrete pumping services.
D21: Machinery and Pumps
Installs, maintains, and repairs machinery and pumps.
D31: Pole Installation and Maintenance
Installs and maintains utility and other poles.
D34: Prefabricated Equipment
Installs prefabricated equipment in construction.
D38: Sand and Water Blasting
Performs sand blasting and water blasting services.
D42: Sign Installation
Installs non-electrical signs.
