About These License Types
A: General Engineering Contractor
Authorizes construction of fixed works requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill, including irrigation, drainage, water power, water supply, flood control, inland waterways, harbors, docks, shipyards, dams, hydroelectric projects, levees, railroads, highways, tunnels, airports, sewers, bridges, pipelines, parks, refineries, and power plants.
Not authorized: Does not authorize work under a Class B General Building Contractor license or any specialty (C) classification unless incidental to the engineering project.
C-4: Boiler, Hot-Water Heating and Steam Fitting Contractor
Installs, services, and repairs power boiler installations, hot-water heating systems and steam fitting, including fire-tube and water-tube boilers, piping, fittings, valves, gauges, pumps, radiators, fuel oil tanks, chimneys, flues, and associated solar heating equipment.
Not authorized: Does not include warm-air heating or air conditioning systems (see C-20).
C-16: Fire Protection Contractor
Lays out, fabricates, and installs all types of fire protection systems including all associated equipment.
Not authorized: Does not include electrical alarm systems.
C-20: Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Contractor
Fabricates, installs, maintains, services, and repairs warm-air heating systems and water heating heat pumps, ventilating systems, air-conditioning systems, and the ducts, registers, flues, humidity and thermostatic controls and air filters in connection with these systems. Fabricates and installs pipelines for conveyance of fluids such as water, gas, or petroleum, including protective coatings and the trenching, boring, shoring, backfilling, compacting, paving, and surfacing to complete installation.
C-36: Plumbing Contractor
Provides means for a supply of safe water and proper disposal of fluid waste, including piping, storage tanks, venting, gas appliances and connections, water and gas piping, water heating equipment including solar, and health and safety devices such as backflow preventers and gas earthquake valves.
Not authorized: Does not include forced warm-air units (see C-20).
C-38: Refrigeration Contractor
Constructs, fabricates, erects, installs, maintains, services, and repairs refrigerators, refrigerated rooms, insulated spaces, temperature insulation, air-conditioning units, ducts, blowers, and thermostatic controls for temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius).
Not authorized: Temperatures above 50F fall under C-20 HVAC.
C-42: Sanitation System Contractor
Fabricates and installs cesspools, septic tanks, storm drains, and other sewage disposal and drain structures, including cast iron, steel, concrete, and vitreous pipe.
HAZ: Hazardous Substance Removal Certification
An add-on certification for removal of hazardous substances. Only issued to contractors holding A, B, C-12, C-21, C-36, C-57, or C-61/D-40 licenses.
