What Does a B-2 License Cover?

Authorizes remodeling of existing residential wood-frame structures with nonstructural projects requiring at least three unrelated building trades or crafts. May self-perform or subcontract trades including drywall, finish carpentry, flooring, insulation, painting, plastering, roof repair, siding, tiling, and minor fixture replacement.

Does not cover

Cannot make structural changes to load-bearing portions including footings, foundations, load-bearing walls, or roof structures. Cannot install, replace, or substantially alter electrical, mechanical, or plumbing systems without the appropriate C license. Cannot perform C-16 Fire Protection, C-22 Asbestos Abatement, or C-57 Well Drilling.

Residential remodeling projects often require building permits, especially for structural, electrical, or plumbing changes. Confirm the contractor will obtain all necessary permits. California law limits down payments to $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less.

California law requires a contractor license for this type of work on projects valued at $500 or more (combined labor and materials). Hiring an unlicensed contractor for work requiring a license may void your consumer protections.
